DISTINGUISHED LECTURER SERIES: Jung and Asian Religion
Jeffrey J. Kripal, PhD
Wednesdays, 5:45 - 7:15 pm
Oct 22 - Dec 3 (no class Nov 26)
$105 ($90 Jung Center members)
Explore Jung's unique relationship with Asian wisdom traditions in this class. Jung was famously interested in Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, and Taoism, but also famously skeptical that the contemplative techniques developed by these great Asian traditions could be easily translated into Western forms that would suit the needs of the Western psyche. This six-week class will introduce the student to both the basic outlines of the Asian traditions themselves and Jung's approach to each of them. We will read together a collection of brief essays that Jung wrote throughout his life on the I Ching, on yoga, on Tantra, and on the various metaphysical teachings that organize these Asian religions and influenced Jung's depth psychology.
Required reading: Psychology and the East, C.G. Jung
