Explore the history of art and trace the creation and influence of humanity's most timeless myths in this class. Because the ability to read and write language has only recently become widespread, art served as the primary medium for telling stories, instructing, and persuading for most of human history. In this class, we will question our basic beliefs in originality, cultural "ownership," and authenticity as we observe the ways in which certain myths "travel" from culture to culture. Each week, we will focus on one of the following themes: the garden, the serpent, the mother, the hero/son, creation myths and the afterlife, and dualities or binary oppositions.

Joan Laughlin has an MFA from Otis College of Art and Design, a post-graduate diploma from the Royal Society of the Arts and a BA in Art History from TCU. She has taught Art History at community colleges in the Houston area for six years.
