How do humans live their relation to the sacred? Voice and light are the classic metaphors for divine presence from Hebraic and Greek traditions, while silence evokes the contemporary loss of faith. This course explores these traditional metaphors of the sacred with an eye toward reworking the creative possibilities of silence. The first week's class will explore the competing images of eternity, and subsequent classes will turn toward specific examples from traditional and modern texts of voice, light and silence.
