Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of man? The shadow knows . . . One of Jung's richest concepts, the shadow goes by many familiar names, including the disowned self, the repressed self, our alter ego, etc. Whatever we call it, we all have a shadow—and in Jung's view, there is great potential for benefit when we become more conscious of these neglected aspects of ourselves. In this course, we will look at the forces that come into play in forming our shadow selves, the ways in which we encounter the shadow, as well as approaches to working with our shadow. Class format is lecture, readings, film clips, and discussion.
Required reading: Meeting the Shadow: The Hidden Power of the Dark Side of Human Nature, Connie Zweig & Jeremiah Abrams, eds.
