$105 ($90 Jung Center members)
Explore the psychologically fascinating story of Gustav and Alma Mahler, two incredibly creative personalities whose relationship had a lasting impact on music and culture. We will examine the relationship from its beginnings to Gustav's death. We will focus on how Gustav's music reflected his feelings before he was able to articulate them, a manifestation of his unconscious turmoil. We will also examine the famous conversation Gustav had with Freud, and we will imagine what Jung's advice might have been had Gustav consulted him instead. This comparison will bring into bold relief the differences between the two founding giants of depth psychology.
Ed Applebaum, PhD, composer and conductor, has taught at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and conducts research on depth psychology and the arts. He currently teaches in the Honors College at UH.
