What can we learn about society from its comedy? Many feel that comedians present the clearest and most accurate portrait of the society with which they interact. We will discuss and view clips of many of the greats from the beginnings of American comedy, including Harold Lloyd, W. C. Fields, Buster Keaton, Charley Chaplin, Abbott and Costello, the Marx Brothers, and others through Bob Hope and Desi and Lucy. We will gradually unfold a vision of American society as presented from a comic point of view - and come to understand how it may not be so comical after all.
Ed Applebaum, PhD, composer and conductor, has taught at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University and in the Honors college at UH. He conducts research on depth psychology and the arts.
