DISTINGUISHED LECTURER SERIES The Many Faces of Christ and the Historical Jesus
Steven DiMattei, PhD
Wednesdays, 5:45 - 7:15 pm
Mar 5 - Apr 16 (no class Mar 26)
$105 ($90 Jung Center members)
What can we know about the Jesus of history, his life and his teaching? Who was he? What did he believe? What historical, literary, and archeological evidence might help us answer these questions? And why even search for the historical Jesus? Isn't the portrait of Jesus as depicted in the canonical Gospels reliable? In this course, students will be introduced to the ‘historical’ Jesus, a Galilean Jew living in the social, religious, and political climate of first-century Palestine under Roman rule. We will also explore how Jesus the Christ is portrayed or even (re)imagined in the Gospels and in art throughout the centuries (and, indeed, in scholarly books on the historical Jesus). We will read selections from the Gospels and from historical Jesus books by modern scholars.
Required reading: Jesus and Empire, Richard Horsley
