Description

Encounter one of the most honored and controversial gods of the Greeks, Dionysus - god of wine, culture, passion, ecstasy, tragedy and madness. This class will look at how the Dionysian principle continues to thrive as an archetypal force of great creativity and destruction. As we read Rafael Lopez-Pedraza's lively book, Dionysus in Exile: On the Repression of the Body and Emotion, we will come to a better understanding of the god in myth, history, culture, and psyche. Supplementary materials, including forays into lyric poetry, theatre, philosophy, and rock 'n roll, will accompany each meeting to help guide our discussion and fantasy. Please read this pithy and engaging book before the first class meeting.
Required reading: Dionysus in Exile, Rafael Lopez-Pedraza
