In a life that can only be lived moment by moment, how do we make sense of the choices we've made? How do we come to terms with how our choices have "made" us? Karen Armstrong has crafted an illuminating and instructive memoir of her struggle to make sense of a life in which, in her mind, she was a complete failure as a nun, as an academic, and as a normal woman capable of intimacy. The Jungian concept of individuation comes to life in Armstrong's recounting of her life's twists and turns, advances and retreats, demands and rewards, pains and joys. In this class, we will use Ms. Armstrong's story as both an illustrative and contemplative means of deepening our understanding of the individuation process.
