Explore the symbolic value of the notion of the "New Age" in ushering society, as well as the individual, into expanded consciousness. Jung's concept of individuation will serve as ground for discussion of the psychic and social imperatives implied by renewal. The components of individuation—projection, recollection, sacrifice, and symbol—will be explored, and we will examine how the symbol of the "New Age" might contain the possibility of the kind of transcendence that culminates the individuation process. We will discuss the ways in which fundamentalist religions and contemporary New Age groups serve as oppositional forces, and we will explore how the intensity of that opposition might generate the emergence of an authentic New Age that transcends both groups.
