Engage in an organic conversation about how we might apply guiding ethical principles to emerging situations in contemporary life. Usually our ability to do something (clone living things, alter DNA, build a bomb to destroy the world, etc.) far outstrips our deliberation about whether or not doing it would be moral or ethical. The first lecture (March 6) will feature an introduction to broad ethical approaches and principles. Each of the three remaining lectures will focus on one of these emerging areas of ethical inquiry: March 13: just war theory (in light of terrorism); March 27: environmental ethics (especially animal rights); April 3: economic justice (including the distribution of wealth, power, etc.).
