What can the story of a life tell us about spirituality that we might not otherwise learn? From Augustine's Confessions to Elizabeth Gilbert's recent Eat, Pray, Love to Jung's Memories, Dreams, Reflections, the spiritual memoir has a long and rich history in Western culture. We will explore the birth and growth of the spiritual memoir, the necessary elements of the genre, the creation of persona, the challenge of voice, and the current publishing climate for these manuscripts. Ms. Cortez also will discuss the ups and downs of her long spiritual journey as she worked to find a home for her own spiritual memoir - and the critical importance of remaining true to one's vision in this process.

Sarah Cortez is the author of an acclaimed poetry collection and winner of the PEN Texas literary award in poetry.
